Levels, Trends of Sexual Behaviour Indicators and Patterns of Risky Sexual Behaviours in Botswana: Is There Any Progress in Improving Sexual Behaviours?

This paper documented levels, trends of sexual behavior indicators and patterns of risky sexual behavior (RSB) in Botswana. Data sources included 2001 Botswana AIDS Impact Survey (BAIS); 2004 BAIS, 2008 BAIS and 2012 BAIS. Findings show that current condom use increased from between 2001 and 2008 but was unchanged between 2008 and 2012. Consistent condom use did not make any significant change between 2001 and 2012. Significant reduction was evident people who had sexual intercourse under the influence of alcohol or drugs between 2001 and 2012. However, there was an increase in the proportion of people who had more than one sexual partner during the past 12 months. RSB index indicates significant differences by district in Botswana. In conclusion, there is no significant change in the risky sexual behavior of people in Botswana. HIV/AIDS interventions need to intensify campaigns to reduce risky sexual behaviors among the sexually active.
