Family Structure and Intergenerational Transfers

We examine the propensity for adult children to give time and money to their parents using new data from the 2013 round of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics. We ask whether adult children provide time and money help differently depending on their parents' marital status and whether this differs by gender of the parent. Our preliminary results suggest that divorced and unmarried parents are less likely to receive help from their children and this is particularly true of fathers.
