Examining the Interplay of Housing and Childbearing Trajectories of Young Adults in Sweden

The relationship between family transitions and household transitions has been a topic of research for both demographers and geographers in the last decades. This study addresses the interdependence of these processes by jointly mapping the housing and childbearing trajectories of young adults. Four Swedish cohorts (born 1968-1971) are observed over a twenty year period, from leaving the parental home at age 18 until the ages of 35-38, as they make multiple housing and family transitions. The study provides key insights to how young individuals time their family and housing transitions, showing how parity and housing configurations change as the cohorts age. Event-history models examine how childbearing risk is related to the type of housing (single- or multi-family home), the tenure (owned or rented), and the timing . This study also investigates how the housing type of origin relates to the housing type during family formation.
