In the Spaces between Big Data and Micro-Studies: A Spatial and Historical Demographic Analysis of Elderly Households in Rural Sweden, 1880-1900

Earlier family household structure hypothesis representing Northwest Europe are not sufficient in understanding Sweden’s regional variation in the decades leading up to the National Pension Act of 1913. Using complete count individual census data, aggregated to various administrative levels, this poster presents regional variations using a simple binary high and low clustered analysis of elderly living in farming, one-generational family household regions. Based on these regional variations, the article examines the relationship of variables such as levels of participation in household retirement contracts, elderly receiving public assistance, and ecological-economic factors which have been hypothesized within prior literature.
